I designed this postcard for Incheon, a Korean restaurant in Annandale, VA. At the time, they were offering a limited and unique tasting menu with food inspired by Korean southern comfort food. Incheon wanted something for the tasting menu guests to take home with them after their meal to create a memory. They also used the postcards to honor special events such as birthdays and anniversaries by writing messages from the chef and the staff.
The bridge depicted in the illustration is the Incheon Bridge in South Korea, and the flying fish were an homage to the restaurant owner, whose nickname in Korean is fish. The backside of the card is a simple representation of the bridge's unique shape, with space for a message and address. This illustration was drawn on Apple Procreate then vectorized in Adobe Illustrator.
Above are some drafts for this project, starting with figuring out the stylization of the fish. I then experimented with different textures in the pen strokes and the sky/water, and how I wanted to represent the bridge. I also played with color to find a balance with blue, white, grey, and yellow. I decided on the angled view of the bridge to allow for depth, and kept the color palette limited to blues with the sun being the only yellow/orange.
